Why the P4000 is important

So it’s official that P4000 will be the minimum wage for a lot of employees, this has been debated about on social media for the last 4 days, we know how the previous regime said it’s not a good idea and that it isn’t sustainable. But I think it’s a good idea for a couple of reasons:

1. Inflation and cost of living has been rising, it makes sense for people’s income to increase as well to keep up

2. Too much money going to a handful of people. In Botswana more money has been only going to a handful of people and in a corrupt way as we can see political leaders and leaders in organisation have been unjustly awarding themselves with income increases and government loans, there is money.

3. Last which is the most important point, countries with the widest inequality often have the most corruption and crimes. Look at countries like South Africa, a country of two halves one side is very rich, with the richest people on the continent while the other side is extremely poor. Income and wealth inequality which causes the haves and the have nots to see a huge gap has often led to violence, crimes, strikes and lack of peace in a nation.

So in order to stop any further problem of inequality caused by greed and corruption proper increase of minimum earnings must be implemented. It’s time Botswana stop trying to imitate countries like the US with a huge inequality issues and imitate countries like Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Singapore.
