Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs with Choppies to improve youth employment
A partnership of Memorandum of Agreement
Good morning 😃🌞☀️ let’s get into it!
So Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has decided to partner with Choppies Enterprise Limited to improve youth employability. Let’s get into how this will happen
National Internship Programme Relaunch – July 2025
Programme name: National Internship Programme
New partners: Botswana’s Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs (now under the Ministry of Youth, Sport & Culture) signed a one-year Memorandum of Understanding with Choppies Enterprises Ltd.
Objective: Improve graduate employability by providing on-the-job experience and bridging the gap between academia and industry
Number of roles: Choppies will host over 150 interns locally, with additional placements available at branches in Zambia and Namibia
International component: High‑potential graduates in fields like engineering, health sciences, policy, and tech will be offered cross-border internships abroad, backed by pre-departure mentoring and training
Duration: Up to 24 months, extending eligibility to diploma and degree holders aged up to 35
Host organisations: Placements available in government, parastatals, NGOs, and private sector entities
Support & benefits: Interns receive a monthly allowance (approx. P2 000), medical cover, protective gear, and earned leave; placements can count toward future permanent‑employment probation
Governance and oversight: Managed by a dedicated unit in the internship department, with monitoring divisions overseeing placements, welfare, and finance
Strategic aim: Strengthen public‑private collaboration to reduce youth unemployment and support localisation and private‑sector growth
Long‑term goals: Align with national development policy by upskilling young professionals, boosting work readiness, and positioning Botswana as a knowledge‑based economy
