Lemang Dijo Farming Programme

Finally open

armGood morning, let’s get into it!

Yesterday, November 24th, marked the launch of "Lemang Dijo" (Let's Grow Food), a revamped arable subsidy program aimed at empowering small-scale farmers and boosting our national food security.

What is "Lemang Dijo"?

Moving away from older models, the government is introducing a more targeted one-hectare support model. The goal is to maximize yield per hectare rather than just ploughing large areas with little harvest.

Here is what the package includes for eligible farmers:

  • Draught Power: Full support for tractor services.

  • Inputs: Provision of high-quality seeds and pesticides.

  • Post-Harvest Support: Threshing and shelling services to ensure your crop is processed efficiently.

  • Biodiversity Bonus: One beehive colony per farmer! This is a unique addition to boost pollination for better yields and encourage honey production.

  • Insurance: The program is fully insured under the Agricultural Credit Guarantee Scheme, protecting you against risks like drought.

Why the Change?

The Ministry has noted that previous programs often suffered from low yields and high import bills. Lemang Dijo is designed to fix this by focusing on:

  • Efficiency: Better field management and technology use.

  • Security: Reducing reliance on imported food.

  • Economy: Creating jobs and integrating into the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme.
